Lucknow became the focal point of the entire official activities of the British Raj.In June 1857, the rebel forces began the siege of the Residency.

The revolt of 1857 in Lucknow was led by Begum Hazrat Mahal.

Under the command of Maulvi Ahmad Ullah Shah and Turrez Khan the attack on the Residency began on the 30th June, 1857.

A large number of British women,men and children had taken shelter in the buildings there.The building acted as a safe haven for over 3,000 British natives.
