According to Buddhist tradition, Sarnath is where, circa 528 BCE, at 35 years of age, Gautama Buddha taught his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya.

After attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, Siddhartha reached this Mrigadava of Sarnath in search of peace and nature where he got his first disciple.

The number increased and the first sermon was given to the first five disciples and from here Buddhism emerged, that is why Sarnath and deer have great importance in Buddhism.

Buddhism, which started with five disciples from this deer park of Sarnath in the fifth century BC, is today the fourth largest religion in the world.

The number of followers of Buddhism is about 520 million, which is seven percent of the world's population.
